Working with the ABC we did a really depressing experiment to see if and how quickly TikTok would push children’s accounts down rabbit holes around negative gender stereotypes, negative ethnic stereotype, weight loss and Covid mis info. We found that their algorithm wasn’t really ‘into’ weight loss and Covid mis info (yay!) but less great on the pretty nasty gender and ethnicity stuff.
It was possibly the most awful experiment I’ve had the privilege of doing (I was fed so, so much incel content) but it was worth it I think? The issue got some good ABC coverage and my old colleague said she saw me on the trailer for 4Corners. I actually missed it. I was knackered and asleep after a hellish week of TikTok rabbit holes. Won’t be repeating.
